Tuesday Happenings

Hello readers hope all's well in blogland. Today has been a nice quiet day for me I managed to get 2 lots of washing on the line dried and put away (don't you just love the smell of washing dried naturally in the sun). I had a good tidy up and fed and cleaned out the animals. I was all done by 12.30pm so decided to put some items on the local selling pages I have been meaning to get rid of. By 3pm I had sold 2 rugs and a pair of curtains and my purse was £11 heavier (I will use this for my yellow sticker reductions this week). This evening we had pepperoni pizza and garlic bread for tea and it cost the grand sum of 59p and served 4 of us so 15p each beat that pizza hut and dominos.

15p per person and was a yummy treat

For pudding we had a slice of homemade banana and walnut loaf that I made at the weekend with homemade ice cream sorry no pic but we ate it before I could take one.

Tomorrow I will be getting the free bus to Tesco to pick up a few items ( all Tesco value of course). Then when I get home a spot of housework and if I have time before the munchkins get back possibly a spot of reading. I have 2 books on the go at the moment A 50`s childhood and the second book in the 50 shades trilogy both of which I have almost finished.

The liver is playing up again and I'm in quite a bit of pain so it's painkillers and an early night for me I'm afraid.

How Do You Live So Cheaply ?

I was recently asked this question by a friend of mine and the answer was a long one that I thought would make a good post so here goes.

I think it started out of necessity my husband had left me I was on my own with a six year old autistic son and a new-born baby and was unable to work so had to go on benefits. It was hard going from a situation where we could have pretty much anything we wanted to literally counting pennies out to buy a loaf of bread. I drew on my experience as a child I was the eldest of six children to a single mother. We were poor and I mean poor we didn't have much but everything we did have was second hand. Mum would make cheap meals often using liver and other forms of offal as these were the cheapest forms of getting meat. She would make us cakes and sweets as treats saving trips to the shop for pricey chocolate bars it soon adds up when there are six of you. I watched and I learned and it never did me any harm and I never felt I went without.
How ironic that the woman who I picked up a lot of my frugal tips from is now one of the biggest shopaholics and food snobs I have ever known. I have asked mum about this and reminded her of how we used to live compared to the way she is now and her response is that back then she did not have a choice she had to make do with what she had but now she works full time and has a husband who works full time she can afford to buy what she likes when she likes. I can kind of see her logic however I think even if I was in a position to live the "what I want when I want it" lifestyle I would still choose frugalism a hundred times over.

So how do I live so cheaply ?
Well there are many factors to how I keep our living costs down. I will go through them individually and try and advise as best I can.

Energy
My house is all electric and is on a pay as you go meter. I realise a pay as you go meter is not the cheapest way to go but I prefer it as I can see exactly how much I am using and I am never faced with a huge electric bill at the end of each quarter. As soon as the boys go to school I go around the house and make sure all plug sockets are turned off aside from the fridge freezer of course. I do the same again once they have gone to bed at night. I do not watch TV during the day which also saves us a few pennies. I don't use the tumble dryer unless it is an absolute emergency instead I put my washing out on the line if the weather is nice or on the airing racks indoors if it is raining. I also wait until I have a full load before putting a wash on and put it on the timer so it washes during the night when the electric is on economy seven and much cheaper. We have quick showers using an electric shower so no need for hot water from the water tank. As a result I turn the water heater on only every other day and this heats up over night on economy seven and lasts us for two days before needing to reheat it. When using the oven I turn it off 5 minutes before cooking time has ended as the residual heat continues the cooking process saving me 5 minutes of electric. I also use my crockpot for a lot of meals as this uses less electric than the oven. We only charge electrical items for as long as is needed once they are fully charged we switch the charger off we also wait till the battery is completely dead before charging things up. I let my hair dry naturally instead of using a hair dryer. Heating during the winter months is kept to a minimum instead we wear extra clothes during the day as well as fluffy bed socks and slippers. At night we all wear fleecy pyjamas, bed socks and nightgowns as well as having an electric blanket on each of our beds and an extra duvet each. Very very occasionally I will put the electric fire on in the front room if it is extremely cold and we never ever use the electric storage heaters that are in the house. On average during the warmer months (spring, summer, autumn) we use between 10 and 15 pounds of electric. During the colder months (winter) between 25 and 30 pounds. I put 20 pounds a week of electric on regardless of how much we use so that the extra cost at winter is covered by my weekly over payments during the warmer months.

Phone, Broadband, and TV
I have a simple pay as you go mobile phone which I put 10 pounds a month on and get 100 free minutes of calls, 400 text messages, and 1GB of internet. I looked around for a good deal on my landline and broadband and managed to get 6 months free broadband and then 6 months at £6.50 a month. I paid for a years line rental up front at a discounted rate instead of paying £14.95 a month I paid just £9.95 a month. We also get free calls to landline numbers after 7pm and all weekend. I also got £40 cash back through quidco. I have a Freeview box which I was given for free and my dad installed it all for me free so I have no monthly bills for my TV package.

Entertainment
We occasionally go to the cinema as a family treat. Odeon cinema offer a special card for people with disabilities which get one person as a carer in for free both Brandon and Brad have these due to their autism. On a Saturday and Sunday they have the kids club where they will screen one of the kids new releases for just £2.50 a person. By going to the kids club and using our cards myself, lee, and the 3 boys get in for £7.50 and I take snacks and drinks from home.
We have a lovely park in the next town which has a boating lake, tennis courts, putting green, nature trail, skateboard park, outdoor paddling pool, and a large adventure playground. we take our bathers and towels, bread for the ducks, and a picnic making this a lovely day out free of charge.
The national trust occasionally have free entrance days. Take a picnic with you and again its a free day out.
The local library often have crafting or musical sessions free of charge. Not to mention free books and free dvds to borrow.
Have friends over on a nice sunny day and have a bbq (see how I save money on food in the next section), buckets of water for a water fight, and ask friends to bring a bottle if they wish to have a drink (we are tee total in this house).
We are lucky enough to have several local music festivals held throughout the year free of charge. Again take a picnic and its a nice free day out.

Food
During the week the children have a hot cooked meal at school so on these days we tend to have something simple and cheap like a toasty or something on toast or a simple sandwich. On the days the boys are not at school we have a hot cooked meal but it is done on a budget often using a lot of yellow sticker reductions. The boys have a choice of jam or peanut butter on toast or cornflakes for breakfast, a simple sandwich and fruit yogurt for lunch, and a budget hot cooked meal in the evening. For treats I buy reduced price fruit and cakes, value biscuits, value crisps, and value yogurts as well as baking cakes and biscuits at home. I make my own ice-cream using an ice-cream mix I bought from approved foods which will last us years and I make ice lollies using value lemonade and cola (15p a bottle and will make at least 25 lollies). I go yellow sticker shopping about 3 times a week and cater our evening meals around the items I am able to get. I never pay more than 9p for a loaf of bread and nine times out of ten its hovis. Just recently I have been getting lots of bread finger rolls for 5p a pack of six (ideal for hotdogs), and cheese flavoured muffins 5p for a pack of 4, I also managed to get 10 boxes of Mr Kipling's almond slice cakes for 9p a box. I always buy yellow sticker or value goods as the quality in my opinion is just as good as the brand name items. I spend no more than £50 a week on my shopping and that is for 5 of us 2 adults, 1 teenager, and 2 small people. It covers our food, drink, toiletries, cleaning materials, food and litter for the cat, and food and hay for the rabbit. It also includes pull ups and wipes for Brandon (his autism causes him toileting issues).

Clothes
I am fortunate enough that I have a friend who has two boys both one year older than my two boys every so often she has a good clear out of clothes and shoes and sells them on to me. The same friends mum has a foster son who is a year older than my eldest son and she does the same thing. I also buy from charity shops and sometimes get some real bargains. Just recently my local air ambulance shop was having a sale on children's clothing any two items for a pound and the same for women's clothing. I was able to get a lovely pair of jeans and a top for myself for £1. I also got a really nice coat and a Nike hoody that looked new to me for Ben for £1. When I have no choice but to buy new I look around to get the best possible price on an item. A lot of the supermarkets now do a value range in clothing and often have discount events.

Transportation
As Brad and Brandon are autistic they get a free bus pass plus a free pass for a carer so when we use the bus we only have to pay for Ben which saves a lot of money. We also have a family and friends rail card which gets us 1/3 off of adult fares and 60% off of children's fares. Usually in July there is an offer for a free 2 month railcard and at the end of the 2 months if you take out a years railcard they will give you £10 off costing you £20 instead of £30. I have done this the last two years and it has saved us a small fortune. We walk everywhere that is local and only use transport if we are going to one of the neighbouring towns or further afield.

I hope that some of this information helps someone somewhere to save some money. Anyway off to do a spot of yellow sticker shopping :)

To Blog Or Not To Blog That Is The Question

Well it's been months since my last post and I have to be honest I have been toying with the idea of just closing the blog down as I just can't seem to make the commitment to it I want. There has been a lot keeping me away over the last few months. I have been extremely unwell with a lung and chest infection that would not budge. After 2 months and 3 different lots of antibiotics I finally managed to get rid of it. That said after having blood tests it turns out I have a problem with my liver. One of the enzymes in my liver is dangerously high which would normally indicate the presence of gall stones however I had my gall bladder removed 12 years ago due to gall stones so it can not be that. My doctor is stumped as to what it could be all we know right now is something is wrong with my liver and it is causing a lot of pain in my stomach and back. The doctor has ordered an x-ray and an ultrasound to see if we cant get a better idea of what is going on in there. When you add to that my MD and the boys autism and then the challenges everyday life throws our way you can see why blogging has been the last thing on my mind over the last few months. I have noticed several of my favourite blogs have closed down or have not had posts for months which has left me wondering if this is a common problem a bit like writers block I guess. So do I stop writing or do I continue ? I don't have a huge amount of readers and the main reason I write this blog is for myself and for the boys to look back on when they are older so I will continue with the blog for now and see how we go.

A quick catch up other than all the health stuff we have not really been up to much. The usual knitting and reading from my sick bed and the occasional trip to the supermarket on a Sunday for yellow sticker reductions and little besides that. I have just finished reading A 50's housewife by Sheila Hardy which I found very interesting and I am half way through A 50's childhood which again I am finding very interesting (oh how I love my son's kindle).

As soon as I have something half interesting to blog about I will be back with my next post until then take care.

Snoodes, Beds, And Cheese Part Two

Oh what a polaver this post has been to get up. My computer is having a meltdown it works fine but won't allow us to connect to the internet. Lee has had a look at it and is convinced we need to reinstall the Windows operating system altogether which is easier said than done when you don't have the disk and they retail at £120. Errrrrrrrr no it will have to wait and I will make do with Ben's kindle for now. This said all my pics are on my phone and for some reason blogger will only let me upload a certain amount of pics from my phone in one post. Never mind I think I have it Sussed now and will be using the kindle to take all future blog pics until my computer either stops her hissy fit or is fixed by the Mr.

As I was saying in part one we have new beds here is a pic of my new to me bed. Gosh It feels strange sleeping in a bed after spending months on the floor. The bed is quite high up  which adds to the strange feeling but it's so nice to have a bed again especially as it cost nothing.

He may only be six but Brandon seems to have a good eye for photography. Here are some pictures he took this weekend.

Brad and Ben went to their dad's this weekend so it was just me and Brandon so we had a marathon movie session and took some self indulgent Saturday selfies.

I love how innocent he looks in this one

And a big cheesy grin in this one

Anyway off to get some beauty sleep in my new bed take care all

Snoodes, Beds, And Cheese Part One

Hello all Hope everyone is keeping well in frugal blogland. Here at Tilly towers we have had a fab week.On Monday my lovely friend S gave me a nice lot of free cheese. Her dad works in a cheese factory and gets to take some home with him for free. Occasionally when he brings way to much home S kindly sends some my way.

Mmmmmm free cheese yummy

I have been working on this snoode style scarf on and off for a few weeks now and finally got it finished this week. It is lovely and chunky and I'm tempted to keep it for myself lol. It will either be sold or put away as a Christmas present for next year I'm not quite sure which yet.

Lovely chunky wool it took 200g of wool which cost me £2 in total from poundland

Brad and myself have been in desperate need of beds. For some time now we have both been making do with a mattress on the floor each. After realising there was no spare money nor was there going to be to buy new beds I put an ad on the free to collector fb page. It took a few weeks but we now have new beds. Brad has a solid pine single bed and I have a double divan bed. Both are in fab condition and we have kept our own mattress each. Total cost for both beds was £20 to hire a local man with a van to collect them as I don't drive.

Brad and Brandon modelling the new bed lol

Anyway this concludes part one of this blog post I will be back shortly with part two and an explanation as to why I have had to do it in two parts.

Birthday Celebrations And Poorly Boys

Well Ben's birthday went very well he was very happy with what he got (money which he is spending very wisely) and he had a fab time at the cinema and loved the new hobbit film. He has bought himself a second hand laptop off of eBay which was advertised for 70 pounds but I made an offer of 60 which was accepted saving him 10 pounds. He has some money left but is saving it till he see's something he really wants or needs (I have taught him well lol).

I got some good yellow sticker reductions again the other day I got the following
1 tray of 12 chocolate doughnuts 45p
2 x 2 corned beef slices 49p a bag
3 x 4 chicken thighs cooked in stout 79p a bag
2 egg salad rolls 19p each
2 tuna baguettes 19p each
2 ham and cheese sandwiches 19p each
1 cheese and ham pretzel 19p
2x 3 cinnamon swirls 15p a box
3 apple crowns 15p
5 bread rolls 15p

I also bought a bag of new to us clothes from a friend for 10 pounds and got some lovely items lots of them designer names including several onesies ideal for this cold weather. I was also informed that as we have 3 disabled people living in the house we may be eligible for the governments warm home discount scheme where they credit your electric bill with 135 pounds. I called earlier today and was told it sounds like we are eligible for it but had to be passed through to the assessment team which had a 20 minute wait so decided to call back when its less busy. I will let you know how we get on with the process and if anyone who has a disabled person living in the home or you are on a low income would like the link to applies themselves please let me know.

I had a bit of a clear out of the boys clothes that no longer fit them and have put them on the fb selling pages and have 2 people picking up items today Brandon's clothes bundle and the purse. The money I make will pay for the clothes I bought from my friend and a little profit on top which is always nice.

Brandon's clothes bundle sold for 10 pounds and being collected today

Ben's clothes bundle still up for sale for 10 pounds

Purse sold for 2 pounds and being collected today

I also have a very nice clock and a stair gate that I need to photograph and put up so hopefully that will bring in a few extra pennies.

I thought I would share some pictures with you of when the family came down to visit over xmas it was a really nice day and almost everyone was in their onesie's all day lol.

At the moment I have 2 poorly boys upstairs in bed. Ben has been being sick since this morning and Brandon is complaining of a tummy ache so they are both tucked up in bed. There is a norovirus doing the rounds so no doubt thats what it is. Anyway better go tend to my poorly little guys.

Blogging From Bed

I come to you this evening from the comfort of my bed. I am nicely tucked up with my electric blanket on and a big fluffy nightgown and fluffy bedsocks. The boys are dressed much the same but do you know what it's early January and we have only had to put the heating on a hand full of times so far this winter. I am in love with Ben's kindle it is allowing me to get things done even when I'm feeling unwell and not at my best. I've had a headache everyday for about a week now and it's driving me nuts painkillers and sleep are my best friends right now. I have managed to get out and do a few things this week with the help of my lovely man Lee. On Sunday we went reduced price shopping (yellow sticker) I spent the grand sum of £3.50 and for that I got the following items
12 pieces of chicken cooked in stout
1 southern fried chicken fillet
1 gammon shank
4 spaghetti Bolognese ready meals
6 tubes of sausage meat
10 all butter croissants
4 Apple and cinnamon scones
1 cranberry and white chocolate bouble
8 egg custard tarts
4 loaves of bread
2 Apple strudels
12 gooey ginger muffins
and possibly a few other items that I have forgotten.

On Monday we went into town to buy a new Hoover as mine decided to blow up on me last week. I did some research and found a nice vax reduced from £129.99 to £49.99 and comes with a two year guarantee. So I guess if your Hoover is going to blow up then January is the best month for it to do so as you can get a better one in the January sales for less money.

On Tuesday we went to bath to pick up my new hearing aids. We was seen on time and was in and out very quickly. I can't even begin to tell you what a difference they have made I am hearing sounds and voices I have not heard for years. The other day I heard the rain for the first time in years, I have heard my children's voices clearly, I have heard my darling Lee's voice clearly for the first time, and I am slowly rediscovering my love of music. It is an emotional journey for me and there have been a lot of tears over the last few days happy tears though not sad.

On Wednesday I  had a rest day although why I call it a rest day I don't quite know as I usually spend my rest days catching up on jobs in the house lol. To me a rest day is a day when I don't go out as going out is pretty hard work with the MD and really takes it out of me.

On Thursday I had another rest day although I did pop to my local one stop where I was surprised to see a LOT of yellow sticker reductions so I got the following
5 large pepperoni pizzas 50p each
2 packs of 4 chicken breasts £3 each
2 250g butter 77p each
2 packs of 9 crumpets 50p each
8 hovis bread rolls 25p

Today we popped to the optitons to pick up Ben's new glasses. He looks so cute in them and very intelligent although he is very intelligent anyway. We then went to return our dvds to the library and choose some new ones. On the way home I had to pop into Morrison's and was lucky  enough to pick up some more yellow sticker reductions. Today I got the following

6 packs of 4 pork pies 9p a pack
10 packs of 10 slices of roast beef 9p a pack
2 quiche lorraines 9p each
1 tub of cheese and bacon pasta 9p
1 tub of tuna mayo and sweetcorn 5p
4 packs of 2 creme caramels 5p a pack

Tomorrow is Ben's 10th birthday so as his birthday treat he is allowed one of his friends to sleepover and I will be cooking his favourite meal of mild chicken curry. I will use a pack of the yellow sticker chicken I bought for £3 and 2 jars of the curry sauce I stocked up on when they were just 20p. This will serve 3 people twice as half will be frozen for another day. So 57p a portion minus the cost of rice which I have lots of in the store cupboard at just 30p a kilo. He has a chocolate gateau cake for pudding again yellow sticker at £1.30.

On Sunday Lee will be taking Ben and his friend to see the new hobbit movie at the cinema done in frugal fashion of course. Trains there and back as its cheaper than the bus plus we have a rail card so get a further 60% off child's fairs and 1/3 off of adult fairs. We have a free adult guest ticket to use so Lee will get in for free and then it will be £6.45 for each of the 2 boys. Normally I would sneak treats and drinks in in my handbag but as I'm not going and Lee does not use a handbag lol we will be getting the family deal for £10 which consists of 2 small drinks, 2 small popcorns, 2 small sweets, 2 medium drinks, 1 medium popcorn. I'm not sure yet but we may have enough points on our Odeon loyalty card to pay for the drinks and treats I will have to get Lee to check.

Anyway off to watch one of my free library dvds whilst eating a yummy 2.5p warm slice of quiche hmmmm it's a hard life lol.

Much Love
